Tempe’s General Plan is a policy document required by state law to be updated every ten years. It serves as a guide to the city’s vision of land use, development, and transit. Tempe’s 2050 General Plan is currently in development.
Initial surveys showed support for the new plan but a vocal minority have shown up in force to city meetings. In response, the city has rolled back some of the changes, lowering density in certain areas and changing mixed-use zoning to commercial.
These changes would make Tempe less affordable, less sustainable, and less walkable and transit-friendly than it otherwise could be. This is the wrong direction to take when we are dealing with both a housing and climate crisis.
The city needs to hear from more than a vocal NIMBY minority. Please show up to the Development Review Commission meeting this Tuesday and make your voice heard. We need people to show up in support of housing and transit in Tempe.
You can also give feedback online.
